Portico Quartet – Portico Quartet (2012)

If you haven’t heard Portico Quartet and you like modern Jazz, then you really need to check them out. They are a London-based jazz group, who make use of a drum called a hang, worth noting because of the distinctive sound it makes.

This is the band’s 3rd album and the first since replacing the original hang player (“hangist”?)/percussionist.

While this eponymous album is good, and is once-again pushing the boundaries of Portico Quartet’s wide-open, chilled out, distinctive experimental jazz sound, it isn’t quite as good as their previous two albums. All the elements are there, maybe it will just require a few more listens?
