GoGo Penguin – Fanfares (2012)

GoGo Penguins - Fanfares (2012)

You can’t really go that wrong when the opening track (Seven Sons of Bjorn) is a tribute to Esbjörn Svensson, who died in a scuba diving accident in 2008.

GoGo Penguin are a trio of piano, bass, and drums. Stripped back Jazz and great sounding too. From the bass-led Akasthesia, through the thumping Fanfares, and the superb crescendo of HF.

The most obvious influence is e.s.t., with the tribute track and the straight-forward, no messing sound created, though fans of The Bad Plus would enjoy this album too. However, on Fanfares, GoGo Penguin are more reserved, but no less impressive, driving forward with impeccable cohesiveness.

The album is a great modern Jazz outing and I look forward to listening to more from them in the future.

Favourite tracks: Fanfares, Akasthesia, HF.
